What is Ultraviolet UV Water Sterilizer?

As a water treatment technique, UV is known to be the most effective method for disinfecting bacteria from the water without using any chemicals like chlorine or leave any harmful by products. UV disinfects water containing bacteria and viruses and can be effective against Giardia lamblia cysts or Cryptosporidium oocysts.

How often do I need to change the bulb for my Bluonics UV system?

The LED light on my UV ballast turned red, what can be the cause?

Normally the cause of a bulb or ballast failure is a crack in the glass tube that protects the bulb and some moisture gets in the connection where the wire plugs in the bulb. Can you check inside the glass tube to make sure it's not wet. If everything looks dry and the bulb is on, it can be a faulty ballast.

Can I attach the PVC piping to my Bluonics UV unit?

The piping doesn’t need to be metal but UV light will degrade PVC piping over time, causing damage to the pipe plastic. Instead of a hard PVC pipe, we recommend a flexible stainless steel line or something like Falcon Stainless Steel Flex Line.

I have a water softener, where should I install the UV system?

You should always install the UV sterilizer last, after the softener, Filtration systems or the tank. If the water is cloudy or high in turbidity, it is essential to treat the water prior to treating with UV light.

We have hardness in our water, can we use UV system to help with that?

UV system is not a water softener. It kills bacteria, but it does not reduce hardness, bluonics filters are excellent to remove sediment, chlorine, odors and many other chemicals and contaminants.


I just noticed my UV ballast is really hot, almost melted, what can be the cause?

There might be a leak in your system, if the moisture gets to the tube it makes the ballast to get really hot, the sleeve is very brittle and there is a chance that crack and the moisture might get in.

Yes, you can install the system either vertically or horizontally.

How much space does the UV unit requires?

The unit is 36 inches long. You will need at least 80 inches of space to install and to change the UV bulbs

Do you have a switch to turn on the UV bulb only when water is flowing?

The UV bulbs came with a plastic wrap and black orings around it, should I remove it?

Yes, remove the wrapper plastic from the bulb as well as the black orings meant to safeguard the bulb during shipping. 

Can I reuse the quartz sleeve?

Yes, if the quartz sleeve is not cracked or chipped you can reuse it, just clean the sleeves when changing bulbs.

My UV sterilizer cylinder is hot and the water feels warm, is that normal?

Yes, The UV sterilizer does get hot while idle, this is perfectly normal. Just run the water for a couple of seconds and the cylinder will cool off.
